TDK Corporation has launched the HVC50, a high-voltage DC contactor designed for safe and efficient connection or disconnection of lithium-ion batteries operating up to 1500 V. It is intended for use in traction systems, energy storage systems (ESS), and megawatt charging systems (MCS).

The DC contactor can interrupt DC voltages up to 1500 V and currents up to 1000 A in under 30 milliseconds. It supports continuous operation at 750 A. With a compact form factor of 97.8 x 140 x 94.2 mm and a weight of 1.7 kg, the contactor is built for industrial and commercial vehicle use, offering robust performance and easy integration.

Key to its design is a ceramic, gas-filled arc chamber that enables fast and safe disconnection even under demanding conditions. An integrated mirror contact, compliant with IEC 60947-4-1, provides accurate switching feedback to enhance safety. Its bidirectional current capability allows current flow in both directions, increasing its application flexibility. The contactor also features a dual-coil system that supports 12 V or 24 V operation. It uses 50 W when switching and only 6 W in steady state, with one coil turned off approximately 200 ms after activation.

Some of the key features of the HVC50 include:

  • Maximum cut-off: 1000 A (DC) at 1500 V (DC)
  • Continuous operation: up to 750 A (DC) at 1500 V (DC)
  • Main terminals without polarity (bi-directional)
  • Auxiliary contact is a mirror contact (acc. to IEC 60947-4-1)
  • Dual coil
  • Coil termination with TVS diode
  • RoHS compatible

Certified to CE, UKCA, and UL standards, the HVC50 meets international requirements for use in Europe, the US, and Asia. As demand grows for reliable power solutions in energy storage and high-power charging, the HVC50 supports the shift to an all-electric, low-carbon future.
