Melexis has released the MLX90642, a compact infrared (IR) thermal sensor with a 32×24 pixel array. It offers strong performance at a low cost, thanks to a better signal-to-noise ratio, global shutter readout, and built-in temperature calculation.

The MLX90642 is designed for use in smart cooking, HVAC systems, fire detection, power electronics monitoring, and hotspot detection. Its small TO39 package makes it easy to fit into tight designs. It also comes factory calibrated, so it can report temperatures directly without needing a separate microcontroller, helping to reduce system size, cost, and complexity.

With a Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) of 65mK at a 2Hz refresh rate, and a configurable refresh rate up to 16Hz, the sensor delivers clear and accurate thermal images. It also works reliably in a wide temperature range from -40°C to 85°C and resists errors from surrounding heat sources.

By offering accurate temperature detection in a small form factor, the MLX90642 helps improve safety and performance in both consumer and industrial systems. For example, in smart appliances and HVAC, it enables better control, energy efficiency, and safety. It also supports smart automation where precise feedback is needed.

The company claims that the IR thermal sensor opens up new design possibilities in areas like AI-powered vision, occupancy sensing, and gesture recognition, where low noise and high refresh rates are important.

It comes in two field-of-view (FOV) options—45°x35° and 110°x75°—with 768 IR pixels. The sensor uses just 28mA of current, runs on a 3.3V supply, and communicates through a standard I2C interface. Melexis supports this sensor with strong manufacturing and deep application expertise, making it ready for a wide range of uses.

“With the new MLX90642, Melexis is setting a new standard for thermal sensing,” said Joris Roels, Marketing Manager at Melexis. “ This sensor redefines the balance of performance and cost, enabling a wider range of intelligent and sustainable products.”
