BYD has inaugurated its first all-terrain circuit in Zhengzhou, a purpose-built venue designed for new energy vehicles (NEVs). The facility is part of the company’s broader circuit expansion plan and reflects its “Technology for All” philosophy, aiming to foster NEV culture by combining racing, training, and experiential driving in one location.

Unlike conventional single-track layouts, the All-terrain Circuit integrates eight experience zones: Indoor Sand Dune, Low-Friction Ring, Kick-Plate, Wading Pool, Dynamic Paddock, Race Track, Off-Road Park, and Camping Area. This design provides visitors with a diverse set of driving scenarios that range from precision testing to recreational challenges.

The features are:

  • 1,758-meter race track with nine curves
  • 550-meter straight section for high-speed acceleration
  • 15,300-square-meter dynamic paddock
  • Includes slalom, moose testing, and automated parking demonstrations

A key highlight is the Guinness World Record-certified indoor sand dune, standing 29.6 meters high with a 28-degree slope. Constructed with 6,200 tons of sand replicating the Alxa Desert, it offers the highest and largest dune-climbing facility for vehicles worldwide. The 70-meter water-crossing pool, designed specifically for BYD’s YANGWANG U8, further enhances the extreme driving portfolio. Visitors can view vehicles maneuvering underwater through observation glass, showcasing the company’s e4 platform control technology.

The circuit also functions as a testbed for advanced NEV safety systems. The Kick-Plate simulates sudden skids on icy terrain, while the Low-Friction Ring—China’s first 44-meter-diameter circular track built with 30,000 basalt bricks and a water layer—enables controlled drifting using the company’s millisecond-response electronic control systems. For adventure enthusiasts, 27 off-road scenarios—ranging from beginner to expert level—ensure accessibility for both rugged 4x4s and urban SUVs.

Looking ahead, the company plans to open two additional circuits in Hefei and Shaoxing. The Shaoxing site will feature a 2,000-acre off-road area at 500 meters altitude. Alongside the Federation of Automobile and Motorcycle Sports of China (CAMF), BYD has launched the “New Track Scheme,” targeting one million participants and nurturing 100 professional racers.
